Flyer Distribution

Flyer distribution may seem a bit outdated, but the truth is that it is still an extremely effective and viable option for most small and medium sized businesses marketing locally. Having flyers delivered directly to your potential clients' doors is a great way of reaching your target audience by exact demographic. For many advertisers, this means increased conversion rates – and best of all, you’ll be saving money that would have otherwise been spent on stamps, envelopes, and mailing lists.

As with any printed material, keep in mind that you have to catch the attention of your audience quickly and persuade them to take action instantly. Since you only have a few seconds to intrigue your reader, here are some tips:

Catch the reader’s attention!

  • Use a big, bold headline to tell the reader what you have to offer! Remember that bigger = most important. Don't fill your ad with too much extraneous text, as most people will only read the text that stands out the most and cast the rest to the side.
  • Use quality graphics to draw them in.  Don’t waste your valuable space with mediocre clip art.  Great images are worth the investment.
  • Use color if it’s in your budget!  Rarely will you see a flyer with only black and white and the reason is simple - you only have one shot and you have to do it right!  Studies have shown that color ads fare 62% better than black and white ads. Don’t waste your marketing budget on lackluster advertising.

Create an incurable desire!

  • Offer incentives and/or coupons! Most people cannot turn down a great deal, so a majority of them will save a good coupon even if they don't visit your business right away.
  • Be sure to include eye-catching and relevant images in your flyer. If you say you have the best submarine sandwiches in town, you may want to show your most popular foot-long sub piled high with all the fixings. If you can make them salivate, you’re likely going to get their business.

Encourage the reader to take action!

  • Put a deadline on your offer!  Deadlines will encourage the reader to come to you immediately or to at least plan when they will come to you.
  • Include your contact information. Make sure they know where you're located and how they can reach you. If you have space, you can even include a small map.

Some food for thought…

  • Don't put your logo or business name at the very top of your flyer. Include it at the bottom with your contact information. If it is the last thing your readers see, it will be fresh in their minds.
  • Don't distract your audience with shocking colors, fonts, or excessive graphics.
  • Stick to a simple typeface for the body of your ad. A couple of favorites are Arial and Times New Roman, which are both clean and easy to read. Stay away from decorative or cursive fonts if you can help it.
  • Unless your specific audience is vision-impaired, stick to font sizes between 10 and 14 point. Most people will be able to read this with ease.
  • ALWAYS ask a couple of people you know for an honest critique, from general grammar usage to layout and graphics.

If you’re going to use good old grassroots advertising, make your best efforts to do it correctly.  Follow the rules above and you should be well on your way to effectively advertising to your local audience.
